Eco-Friendly Home Decor

With the greatest global financial and economic crises since the Great Depression -not to mention the rising environmental crisis that the world has ever seen -happening in this generation, it's easy to see why even the most hardened of home decor specialists want to go green. Homes that are eco-friendly are the trend today and they do not have to sacrifice a great part of their design for it. It isn't tacky at all, as a few initial reactions might suggest. On the contrary, many places, especially those in the hospitality industry, are going green as well. Energy-saving items such as natural area rugs help a lot in the effort.

So what exactly comprises eco-friendly home decor? For one thing, the main concerns are good designing that is energy saving as well as money saving. Hence, both form and function go hand in hand in this case.

Good designing means going for the maximum style potential in your decorating.

As always, make sure that the theme is consistent with what you are trying to express. In the case of green home decor, there are a lot of natural area rugs that go quite well with the rest of your furniture. Light colored ones would look good in a sitting area to maintain that warm, welcoming feel and darker ones can be put in places such as your bedroom.

So how can one actually save energy with green home decor? Area rugs! The thing to remember about area rugs is that those made out of natural materials such as wool and cotton trap heat in a room quite well, which means that thermostat would need less and less tweaking, and in the process actually conserving quite a bit of energy. If you think that they are probably just a waste of time and money, you will definitely change your mind when you see how they keep your feet warm and cozy in the cold winter months.

Moreover, they also help a lot in keeping the house a whole lot warmer.

Money saving? How so? With your bills, of course. It's surprising to see how your electricity bills can skyrocket during the later months of the year, and this is mostly due to high thermostat usage. A warm home eats up a lot of energy, and you will spend a lot for it. Rugs that trap heat lessen both thermostat usage and ultimately energy consumption and expenses.

Try to find the most attractive rug to suit your home. There are a ton of designs and patterns for you to choose from, and retailers are often more than happy to suggest the type of rug that matches your room's theme best. Whether your home is done in Moroccan decor, contemporary, country or Southern style, you are sure to find an area rug to suit that style. What's more, area rugs come in a wide range of sizes to fit any room.

If you are looking for a style that will also help you save money in the long run, ride the bandwagon and go eco-friendly with your home decor. In time, you are sure to agree it is well worth it.

Decorating Your First Home

The purchase of your first home is a very exciting thing, but actually moving into your first home can be even more exciting. This may be your first chance to create a home or a family.

It will also be your first chance to completely decorate and make the space yours. If you are like many people, you moved out of a small apartment or college dorm into your new house.

You now have much more space to work with as well as liberty. This extra space can seem overwhelming at first if you think about it too much.

When it comes to decorating, the first thing you will need to do is clean your old apartment or living area. You do not want to leave a huge mess for someone else to clean up.

When you get a confirmation that you will be able to move into your new home, you will want to start packing and cleaning right away. These tasks are going to take some time and you do not want to run into a crunch at the end.

After you are done with the old home, you will want to turn your attention to the bedrooms. Each bedroom is an individual area that each person in your family can add their own touch to.

In addition, about a third of your time will be spent in the bedroom so it is worth it to spend your time there. If your bedding is old, you may want to consider purchasing new, fluffy, warm bedding.

The color and style of the bedding can completely alter the way that a room looks. After you have selected the bedding, pick what color of paint you want to paint the walls.

This color should complement the bedding well. In children's rooms you may want to add wall decals and other designs to the walls.

Remember to carefully plan out where you are going to hang up pictures and to measure and level it before you finish. If you can, try to think about who will be sleeping in the room.

Those who like to sleep in tend to like dark colors for bedding and for the walls. However, those who get up early in the morning tend to like lighter colors.

The next thing you will need to do is space out when you buy things. You just bought your first home, so you are probably making payments that you are not used to paying.

Purchasing a house is a huge expense. Even if you feel like you have money to spend on decorations, wait a little while to buy them.

When you move in, you will have an idea of how you will live in that home. However, after a couple months of actually living there you may find that you expectation has changed slightly.

Instead of having a particular thing placed in a certain spot, you may find that you prefer it in a different spot. After you have settled in, moved things around, and lived there for a couple of months, you will have a better idea of how you want things to look and what kinds of decorations would be the most effective. You may find that you would prefer to remodel a different room than the one you originally intended to remodel.

In addition, you should be careful to avoid matching every room in the same colors and fabrics. Not everything has to match and it often looks better if not everything does match, but complements each other.

Use different prints, colors, and patterns to let your personality shine through. You may enjoy looking through home room design magazines and getting ideas and learning how to do styles that you like.

Remember to balance everything in the room so that nothing looks overdone. Do not put too much into one room.

If one thing is going to be the same, the best thing to keep constant is the color. The color can tie everything together while allowing a variety of styles and patterns to attract and capture the eye.

For example, in your daughter's room you may want a unifying color of pink. However, everything in her room should not be plain pink.

Let whites, purples, greens and blues sneak in through different patterns and wall decorations. This will make the room much more interesting and a beautiful masterpiece.

If you begin remodeling, try to find as many bargains as possible. Remodeling projects tend to expand into big, expensive ordeals.

Contrast Home Decor

When all of the colors in a room match up as variations on a single shade you get an integrated effect which is quite lovely. However this effect lacks a certain amount of power. It is calm, and comfortable, but it isn't inspiring.

Contrast is when two matching colors violently oppose one another. This obvious animosity, even if it is merely personification, makes a space seem more alive. Our eyes are drawn, inexorably, to such palettes.

The attraction comes from the fact that the effect is visually stimulating. When we see a deep red next to a dark green, or a soft yellow contrasted with a sky blue, our eyes are stimulated by the opposing tones, and drawn in by the fact that they actually compliment one another.

The power that can come with contrasted colors is used to good effect ion places where it is important to maintain a certain amount of drama in the atmosphere, such as in an opera house, a theatre, or a royal palace.

However you probably don't live or work in an opera house, so you should be cautious that you are not using too much contrast in your space.

That high level of energy, the drama, the visual passion, can actually make a space rather uncomfortable, if you have to live and relax there on a day to day basis.

On the other hand if you are a creative person, having an office that has sharply contrasting colors may actually be an inspiration to you. Another positive effect of this is that all of that energy will be intimidating to people who are not used to it, which may give you an advantage over your competition.

Contrast is an important decorating tool that you should not neglect. Use small items which have dramatic shades and tones, contrasted against softer backdrops, to add excitement to an otherwise drab space.

As long as you are balanced in your methods, this can be a great way to add some inspiration to your home.
